So, several recent conversations have sparked this particular blog...And they go a little something like this "HIT IT!" :-D...LOL
First, I was having a discussion with a friend recently about how some artist "make it" and don't have a lick of talent...and their "fans" know they lack talent yet they sale millions and are way "HOTTER" than the artist that do honestly have talent...like WTF?!?! Someone actually said to me "I love Rihanna, her songs are so cute and I'm a big fan but that girl can't sing at all!" Yet, Rihanna is considered by most to be one of the hottest stars out now....
Then Aaron and I saw Musiq's new video, Radio...let's just say I REALLY feel like my boy has sold out! FYI....Musiq, you're a SOUL singer, NOT a rapper, NOT a hiphop star....SOUL, which means you actually have to use that lovely voice God gave you and show people you have talent. In his new song, he doesn't even sing...he's like rapping or whatever he calls it. Now for someone like The Dream or maybe even Nelly, that song may work and be a heater...But Musiq, you are a neo soul type dude from Philly...nothing about you screams "Peace Up, A-Town Down!" even if you did go buy a cute lil fitted! I know why he did it...or rather why his team put him up to it but what does that say...You gotta change who you are to really make it out there. I also understand "stepping out the box" and "trying something different" but there is no need to recreate the will "If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It!" Now, I will say that I appreciate songs like "Love," "143," and "Just Friends" but "Radio?" now that's that BULL...coming from Musiq SoulChild anyway!
This is the Musiq I grew to Love and Appreciate...
I can appreciate true, raw and genuine talent...these days, it's a lot harder to find but like your favorite pair of jeans (that hug your hips just right and make your butt look flawless), once you find it you never want to put it down! With that being said it's a couple of artist that I'm excited to hear what comes from them. Now those who know me know that I LOVE music...I search the web almost daily to find new or undiscovered stuff and not much new stuff, especially the good stuff, slides by me!
So when watching the Monica special a couple weeks ago, I was excited to hear that Monica was staying true to her true fans. She recognizes that ENTERTAINERS like Beyonce and Rihanna sell because of just that, they entertain...but she also recognizes that that's not who she is and that she isn't gonna try to copy what they are doing to get the recognition they get. I can appreciate that! I might be kind of saltly if Monica came out somewhere wearing some of the stuff that Beyonce and Rihanna wear...or if she strolled on stage in some booty shorts and thigh high boots and started "Uh Oh-ing" like Beyonce does...instead she's bringing something that is surely lacking right now...true vocal talents! No outfits or dance moves to disguise it...just her, her mic and her voice! And with that....here's my summer banger and one of my most highly anticipated R & B cds to drop within the next quarter
Then there are two younger artist that excites me: Miss Jazmine Sullivan, 19 from Philly and 21 year old from Texas, Dondria Nicole "Phatffat"signed to SoSoDef...these girls are BAD, no questions asked and boy they can SANG! Jazmine's single thats out now is cool, but I went ahead and googled her and came across some of her other material and....let's just say, that is definitely a must have R & B cd! And, Dondria has a youtube channel with her singing a little bit of everything. Funny thing is she kind of reminds me of Monica when she was younger....With these two and Monica in the game...i'm ok, I know I have some real music to listen to! And they aren't the only one's...it's a handful out there still trying to hold on and provide good music but this bubble gum, sell out shit gotta go and soon! "Marco Polo!" WTF is that mess?!?! I'm not even gonna go into that right now, that's a whole nother story...but I'm happy to see/hear the return of some good, solid, quality, tunes to groove to :-D
I'm definitely a therapeutic writer...
